In 2004, Tropical Islands Resort was constructed. The resort is situated in the old airship hangar of the 1935-built Johannisthal Airfield. The hangar, which is the world’s largest free-standing hall and contains more than 20 million litres of water, is enormous.

The resort was constructed by the Malaysian company Tanjong in the former Aerium airship hangar. Large airships were initially intended to be protected from the elements in the hangar, which is now the third largest free-standing hall in the world. On June 11, 2003, Tanjong paid €17.5 million for it, of which €10 million came from a Brandenburg state subsidy. On 2 February 2004, the theme park’s construction was given the green light, and on 19 December 2004, Tropical Islands made its formal debut. 26 °C (79 °F) and 64% relative humidity are the air temperatures and humidity levels inside the hall.

Tropical Islands can accommodate up to 8,200 tourists per day. According to the owners, it received 975,000 visits in its first year of operation. 155,000 visitors were recorded by the Tanjong firm between February 2004 and February 2005. Around 600 people are employed by Tropical Islands. Tropical Islands holds the title of having the largest indoor waterpark in the world. Located at West Edmonton Mall, Canada’s World Waterpark is smaller than this one. By useable volume, it is also the fourth-largest structure in the entire globe. Tropical Islands was purchased by Parques Reunidos in December 2018.
