From Setup to Finish: Understanding Ludo Rules

Ludo, the timeless board game that has entertained generations, is beloved for its simple yet engaging gameplay. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the game, understanding the rules of Ludo is essential for enjoying a fun and fair gaming experience. In this blog post, we’ll take you through the rules of Ludo, from setup to finish, so you can jump into the game with confidence and start having fun!

Setup

  1. Board Setup

– The Ludo game board consists of a square-shaped playing area divided into four coloured zones: red, yellow, green, and blue.

– Each zone has a starting area, a home stretch, and a home base, where players’ pieces begin and end the game.

  1. Piece Placement

– Each player selects a colour and places their four pieces in their corresponding starting area.

– Players take turns rolling the dice to determine who goes first, with the highest roll starting the game.

Gameplay

  1. Rolling the Dice

– On their turn, players roll a single six-sided die to determine how many spaces their piece can move.

– In some games, the players must roll a six to move a piece out of the starting area and onto the board.

– After rolling a six, the player gets an extra turn to roll the dice.

  1. Movement Rules

– Pieces move clockwise around the board along the coloured path.

– A piece can move the number of spaces indicated on the die, either moving forward or capturing opponent pieces along the way.

– When you play ludo, you must use the exact number rolled to move a piece into the home stretch and home base.

– If a player cannot move any of their pieces based on the roll, their turn is forfeited.

  1. Capturing Opponent Pieces

– When a player’s piece lands on a space occupied by an opponent’s piece, the opponent’s piece is captured and sent back to the starting area.

– However, pieces cannot be captured if they are on safe zones or if the space is occupied by the player’s own piece.

  1. Reaching Home

– To win the game, players must move all four of their pieces around the board and into their home base.

– Pieces must land exactly on the final space in the home base to enter.

– The first player to move all four pieces into their home base wins the game.
